Found Object

The found object required me to find/buy/swap items in a location set by my tutor, the area that my group was allocated the block of buildings in which the Lincoln Drill Hall is located.

The idea behind my photographs was to show things that we see fairly often littering the streets, almost like fallen leaves. This is something that frustrates me, as much is I can never say no to McDonald’s fast food, I cannot stand to see their packaging and many other food outlets packaging littered across the streets.

The government released a policy that started October 2015 that required large shops in England to charge 5 pence for all ‘single use’ carrier bags, as they wanted to reduce the use of the bags and the litter that they caused.

I feel that something should be done to address the problem of food packaging as I feel that this is a large contributor to the litter problem that the majority of the UK is facing. The packaging I have photographed doesn’t seem to have the biodegradable properties as what a plastic carrier bag has but yet nothing is done about this type of packaging.

Below is the triptych that I created.

Research

Paul Bulteel – Bulteel created a series of images called “cycle & recycle”, which documented waste streams in Western Europe. Bulteel photographed around 50 companies who are active in collecting, sorting recycling and reusing waste.

Bulteel’s Gallery for this series is here

Gregg Segal – Is a photographer based in Los Angeles who created a series of images called “7 Days of Garbage”. The series simply involved many people saving their garbage and keeping it for 7 seven days and lying on the ground surrounded by the 7 days worth of garbage. Segal’s ideas behind this was to show the people a visualisation of how much they dispose within 7 days. Segal photographed people of many different walks of life, He even involved himself in the series to show that even he contributed the waste problem.

Segal’s 7 Days of Garbage page is here.
