Portrait

#selfie – “A photograph that one has taken of oneself, typically one taken with a smartphone or webcam and shared via social media.”

#friend – “A person with whom one has a bond of mutual affection, typically one exclusive of sexual or family relations.”

#stranger – “A person whom one does not know or with whom one is not familiar.”

For this brief, I was required to take a photograph of:

Myself, a friend & a stranger.

Below are the three images that I nominate for this brief.

Me

Lydia

Stranger

#me – The image of myself is intentionally blurred as the reasoning behind this stems from the Unilever brand: Dove as they had a campaign called “Different Realities: How we see ourselves vs. How others see us”. I accept that I will never see my true self and only metal images of myself.

#friend – The image of my friend is an image that I really like of my own work. I feel that this image is something that reflects my friends personality, as she has a colourful personality and is always smiling.

#stranger – The stranger was my most preferred image from what I took of strangers as the male wore ‘interesting’ attire in comparison to other people that I photographed in the high street.

Research

Richard Avedon – I was introduced to Avedon’s work in one of the lectures, an image that sparked my interest with the photographer was his piece of work called “Dovima with Elephants, Evening dress by Dior.” Taken at the Cirque d’Hiver, Paris, August 1955. I knew that Avedon’s fashion work wasn’t related to the portraiture brief, but it was something that I really appreciated. After borrowing the book “Avedon fashion 1944 – 2000” I also borrowed another book of his called “Richard Avedon Portraits” as I felt that this would be more tailored to my research.
